CRIME PREVENTION AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education)

The nationally acclaimed D.A.R.E. Program is a drug education program which is taught to the fifth grade students at the Anne Hutchinson and Greenvale Schools. The program consists of a 17 week curriculum, in which each fifth grade student receives approximately one hour per week of instruction. D.A.R.E. is a highly structured and intensive curriculum which was developed by health professionals of the Los Angeles Unified School District. The program is administered by a specially trained police officer. In contrast to most drug prevention programs that focus on scare tactics, D.A.R.E.'s semester-long effort equips students with drug information, methods to enhance self-esteem, ways to resist and/or positively deal with peer pressure, and specific analytical and decision-making skills. Additionally, D.A.R.E. provides the motivation to employ these learned skills. The concept of using a Police Officer to conduct classes provides credibility to the program and also furnishes the children with a positive role model. By relating to children in this credible role of law enforcer, the officer promotes positive attitudes toward the police, and increased respect for the law. The Eastchester Police Department is proud of the fact that over three hundred of our Town's youths have already completed the D.A.R.E. Program. It is anticipated that a Middle School D.A.R.E. Program which would be offered to students in the eighth grade, will soon be implemented in our schools.

Combat Auto Theft (CAT) Program

This is a program to deter auto thefts. It is a volunteer decal programs that allows a police officer to stop a participating vehicle being driven between the hours of 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. to determine if its use is authorized. Vehicle owners may register for the program by completing a registration form indicating that the vehicle is not operated between the hours of 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. Once registered, two decals will be affixed to the inside of both rear-side windows. The decals contain the serial number which is cross referenced with a log book that is maintained at police headquarters. Registration for the CAT Program is weekdays between the hours of 8:00 a.m.and 4:00 p.m. and on Saturdays by appointment. Please call 961-3464 ext. 310 at the Eastchester Police Department, 40 Mill Road. All Eastchester residents are urged to join the CAT Program. The program is currently being offered in numerous municipalities and statewide. Eastchester Police and Civic Associations are working together for a safer town The Eastchester Police Department, under the direction of Chief David Speidell, is very concerned about the welfare of the community. Chief Speidell urges the various civic associations to feel free to contact the Police Department and allow a representative to speak with them at their meetings to discuss their concerns involving crime prevention. In addition to the CAT Program and D.A.R.E., the Police Department also will assist the civic associations in setting up a Neighborhood Watch program. Operation ID is also available to the public. Operation ID consists of the marking of your valuables with an electric engraver by you with your own I.D. number. This engraver is at the Eastchester Police Department and can be borrowed at no cost to the resident.

Child Safety Seat Inspection Program

Currently there are two certified car seat technicians at the police department. They will assist parents with the proper installation of their child's car safety seat. The newly organized program will look for improperly installed, broken or recalled safety seats. We also have on hand car seats to replace defective ones, if needed. The Eastchester Police Safety Seat Inspection Program is located at Town Hall. Inspections will be conducted by appointment. Questions/appointments should be directed to Sgt Robert Cullen or PO Robert Bareika at (914) 961-3464. For more information on car seat safety please visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's web site at http://www.nhtsa.gov/

The Eastchester Police will VIN etch your vehicle at Town Hall

A VIN etched vehicle will mark your car easily, permanently and safely, as a vehicle not to steal. VIN glass etching marks a vehicle with it's own set of fingerprints which makes the vehicle easily traced when stolen. VIN etching will be conducted by appointment. Questions/appointments on VIN etching should be directed to Sgt Robert DeMarco or PO Robert Bareika at (914) 961-3464.
